The submarine was patrolling southern waters off the coast of the Carolinas during the Civil War. |
In shallow water off Sullivan's Island near Charleston, South Carolina (USA) on February 17, 1864. |
Confederate submarine, Hunley sank shortly after ramming the Union warship, the USS Housatonic using a harpoon torpedo mounted on the bow of the vessel. |
The Hunley carried a crew of 9 sailors. All were lost in the sinking. |
The Hunley is a priceless treasure because of her historical importance. She was the first submarine successfully used in wartime and was one of the very first submarines. |
Queen Anne's Revenge |
The QAR was the flagship of the pirate, Blackbeard, also known as Edward Teach. |
The QAR was a pirate ship that threatened all vessels in the coastal waters of the Carolinas. |
The QAR ran aground on a sandbar in shallow waters off the coast of Beaufort, NC (USA) in June of 1718. |
It is believed that the QAR ran aground while sailing in waters known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic. Because of the many shipwrecks off the coast, NC became home to many famous lighthouses. |
It is thought that when the QAR ran aground, another of Blackbeard's ships (The Adventure) may have tried to rescue QAR but may also have sunk. Apparently the crew survived. |
Historians do not expect to find any "treasure" other than that of her history because it is reported that all valuable treasures were removed before she sank. |
U.S.S. Monitor |
The Monitor sank off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC (USA) in March, 1862. |
The Monitor sank in a gale (hurricane like storm). |
