"The Shipwrecks to Remember Project" was first begun in 1994 to promote the sharing of knowledge,
resources, and activities collected and created by students in Jamie Wilkerson's classes at Rosewood
Elementary School. Students worked in cooperation with members of the Columbus-America Discovery
Group and other participating student locations. The project was sponsored by Kidlink. The original
project invited other students and teachers throughout the organization to join with us in activities
developed to stimulate research in all areas of the curriculum, based on the history of the sinking of the
ship, the scientific and historical findings of the Columbus-America Discovery Group, and related topics.
Five years later, we are now a combination of Ms. Jamie Reinsch's sixth grade classes at Sullivan
Middle School and Education 150 class at Winthrop University. Together, we are once again ready to sail
the seas in search of shipwrecks and other underwater archaeological sites. Our focus will expand to
include shipwrecks from around the world. Once again beginning with the core of information and
project ideas collected over the initial years of the project, we seek to expand into all waters of the world
and look collectively at many kinds of ships, different time periods in which they sailed, and their reasons
for sinking.
In addition to studying the ships that sank, we also want to include related topics such as geography,
literature, weather, history, underwater exploration, and archaeology. Students within the Edu150 class at
Winthrop University have been researching and adding ideas for different grade levels and subjects. They
have also worked to try to include NETS standards, as well as state standards. Watch as this project grows
and please join us!
In some ways we envision this project much like an armada, with each ship (classroom) taking on a
focus but sharing together as one collective fleet with a common goal of understanding the how, why, and
where of each historic journey. If we look at this project in that way, then what we seek now are Captains
for each ship...Captains to guide us toward our meeting place in understanding cultures and journeys of
the past. Each Captain will have their own crew of students to sail our waters. So come on board and join
the fleet. We will be much stronger and learn much more as a fleet than as single vessels upon the sea.
Making our information accessible to others is of a high priority to us in this venture. We have begun
a Shipwrecks of the World Database of information that can be shared and posted as it is discovered about
each wreck. Blocks could be linked to areas with more information or images as we needed. If you are
ready to join this high seas adventure, please email us at jreinsc@rock-hill.k12.sc.us and let us know who
you are so we can welcome you aboard!
Wishing you smooth sailing from the Captain and crew at Sullivan Middle School!
Many thanks to CETlink.net (webpages and home access to all areas ) and Infoave.net
( school access and email) for their Internet Support of this project and others..
