Wake Up...Your Page is Loaded!

This is a middle school Science Fair Project.  In this project, I am testing the upload time on webpages during different times of day and night.  If you have reached this site, either by accident or intentionally, please email me with the following information:
  • date and time of access (am or pm)
  • time zone
  • access speed
  • Browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc...)
  • Method of access (cable modem, phone line, etc...)
  • First access or reloaded page
  • how long it took for the page to fully load

To find the upload time, count to yourself "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, etc."  Each one thousand represents a second.  Count from the time that you click on the web page until the time the web page is totally loaded.

Please send the time it took to first load the web page.  Each time that you reload the web page, record the amount of time it takes for the page to reload.

If you are willing to participate three times a day for at least two days of this experiment, please record the information and send it in an email to testwebpage@hotmail.com .   Please space your access times at least three to four hours apart.

Please be sure to make a note if you are using different computers each time you access the web page.

Thank You!

Problem: Is the upload time of a website affected by the time of day?

Hypothesis: I predict the upload time for a website will be affected by the time of day that it is accessed.

Procedure:

1. Using Microsoft Front Page, establish a basic web page to use as a control for experimentation.

2. Establish a way to record data accurately.

3. Send the web page address to people in different locations and using different computer connections. Ask people receiving the web page address to join the experiment and record their data, accessing at least three different times of day.  Ask the people to send results to me.

4. Research information about speed of data transmission over the Internet.

5. Chart the data by time of day.  Analyze the results and draw conclusions.

6. Finalize and create the exhibit.

Materials needed:

  • computer

  • Internet access with e-mail capability and a browser for viewing web pages (Netscape or Internet Explorer)

  • printer with ink and paper

  • Web Page Editor (Microsoft Front Page)

  • A word processor (Microsoft Word)
