Bolden was the first commander of a joint American-Russian space shuttle discovery mission.

Bolden has won the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Medal (among many others).

Brooks was the first black woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

Brooks was a shy child,  becoming  a great reader but  not interested in school. She started writing poetry at seven and her first poem was published in a magazine at age 13.
